A site that takes five seconds to load loses a third of its visitors before they read a word. Speed is part of the design, and it is far cheaper to get right at the start than to fix after launch.
Start with the images
Photos are usually most of a page's weight. Export them at the size they are shown, use modern formats and lazy-load anything below the fold.
Keep the code lean
Every plugin, font weight and tracking script adds time. Use one or two font weights, drop what you do not use and measure before and after each addition.
“Fast is a feature your visitors feel, even when they cannot name it.”
Measure on a real phone
Test on a mid-range phone on a normal connection, not your fast laptop. If it feels slow there, your visitors already know.
This week: run your homepage through a speed test, compress your three biggest images and remove one script you do not need.
